FAQ

What is DTF printing?

Direct to Film (DTF) printing is a modern garment decoration method where designs are printed onto a special PET film using textile pigment inks and then transferred onto fabric using heat and pressure. The printed design is coated with adhesive powder, cured, and then heat pressed onto garments.

DTF printing has become popular in the apparel industry because it allows full-color designs to be printed on a wide variety of fabrics including cotton, polyester, blends, and even some synthetic materials. Unlike traditional printing methods, DTF transfers can be prepared in advance and applied when needed.

What are DTF transfers?

DTF transfers are printed designs created using the Direct to Film printing process. The artwork is printed onto a transfer film with specialized inks and adhesive powder. Once cured, the transfer can be applied to garments using a heat press.

DTF transfers allow businesses, clothing brands, and hobby printers to apply professional-quality designs without owning expensive printing equipment.

What fabrics can DTF transfers be applied to?

One of the biggest advantages of DTF printing is its compatibility with many fabric types.

DTF transfers work well on:
Cotton
Polyester
Cotton/poly blends
Tri-blend fabrics
Denim
Canvas
Performance fabrics

This versatility makes DTF printing ideal for decorating items such as t-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, tote bags, workwear, and uniforms.

Do DTF transfers work on dark garments?

Yes. DTF printing uses a white ink underbase, which allows designs to appear bright and vibrant even on dark fabrics.

Unlike some printing methods that require special processes for dark garments, DTF transfers maintain excellent color vibrancy on both light and dark materials.

How durable are DTF transfers?

High-quality DTF transfers are extremely durable when applied correctly. A properly pressed transfer can withstand 50 or more washes without cracking, fading, or peeling.

The durability depends on several factors including:
Quality of inks used
Proper curing of adhesive powder
Correct heat press temperature and pressure
Following recommended washing instructions

When cared for properly, DTF prints can last as long as the garment itself.

What heat press settings should be used for DTF transfers?

Heat press settings may vary slightly depending on the transfer manufacturer, but most DTF transfers are applied using the following settings:

Temperature: 300–320°F
Press time: 10–15 seconds
Pressure: medium to firm pressure

After pressing, the transfer film is peeled (either hot peel or cold peel depending on the transfer type), and then a second press is recommended for 5 seconds to improve durability.

What is a DTF gang sheet?

A DTF gang sheet is a large sheet that contains multiple designs printed together in order to maximize the use of space. This allows customers to print several logos, graphics, or artwork pieces on a single sheet.

Gang sheets are popular with clothing brands and print shops because they help reduce printing costs and increase production efficiency.

What file format is best for DTF printing?

The recommended file format for DTF printing is PNG with a transparent background. This allows the printer to place the design exactly as intended without unwanted backgrounds.

For best results, artwork should also meet the following guidelines:

Resolution: 300 DPI
Color mode: RGB
Correct final print size
Transparent background if required

Providing high-quality artwork ensures sharper and more vibrant printed transfers.

What resolution should artwork be for DTF transfers?

Artwork should ideally be 300 DPI at the final print size. Lower resolution images may appear blurry or pixelated when printed.

For example, if your design will be printed at 10 inches wide, the image file should be prepared at that size and resolution before uploading.
transfers.

Is there a minimum order for DTF transfers?

Many DTF printing providers offer no minimum order quantity, making it easy for small businesses, clothing brands, and hobby printers to order only what they need.

This flexibility is one of the major advantages of DTF printing compared to traditional screen printing.

How should DTF printed garments be washed?

To maintain the quality and durability of DTF prints, garments should be washed using proper care instructions.

Recommended washing guidelines include:

Turn garment inside out before washing
Wash in cold or warm water
Avoid bleach or harsh detergents
Tumble dry on low heat or air dry
Do not iron directly on the printed design

Following these instructions will help maintain color vibrancy and extend the life of the print.

Can I apply DTF transfers with a home heat press?

Yes. DTF transfers can be applied using most standard heat presses used in the garment decoration industry.

A quality heat press that provides consistent temperature and pressure will produce the best results. Household irons are not recommended because they often cannot maintain consistent heat and pressure.

Why choose DTF printing for custom apparel?

DTF printing offers several advantages for businesses and individuals who want high-quality custom apparel.

Some of the key benefits include:

Full color printing with no color limitations
Works on many fabric types
No weeding required
No minimum order quantity
Excellent durability
Vibrant and detailed prints

These advantages make DTF printing one of the fastest-growing methods in the custom apparel industry.

What surfaces work best for UV DTF stickers?

UV DTF stickers are incredibly versatile and adhere best to hard, smooth surfaces. Ideal materials include glass, plastic, metal, ceramic, wood, and acrylic. They are not designed for fabrics or soft, highly flexible materials.

Do I need a heat press to apply UV DTF Stickers?

No heat press is required. Unlike traditional DTF transfers for apparel, UV DTF is a cold-transfer process. All you need are your hands and perhaps a squeegee or a hard plastic card (like a credit card) to help smooth it out.

How should I prepare the surface before applying the UV DTF Stickers?

Surface preparation is key for a long-lasting bond. Wipe the area down with rubbing alcohol or an alcohol wipe to remove any dust, oils, or fingerprints. Allow the surface to dry completely before applying the UV DTF Stickers.

What is the step-by-step application process for the UV DTF Stickers?

Applying the sticker takes just a few moments:

  1. Clean: Ensure your hard surface is clean and completely dry.
  2. Measure: Position the sticker where you want it before removing the backing to ensure it fits perfectly.
  3. Peel: Carefully peel the white paper backing off the sticker. Make sure the design stays attached to the clear transfer film.
  4. Apply: Place the sticker onto the surface. Start from one side and slowly roll it down to the other to prevent trapped air bubbles.
  5. Burnish: Firmly rub the entire design using your fingers, a squeegee, or the edge of a credit card. Pay special attention to the small details and edges.
  6. Reveal: Slowly peel the clear transfer film away at a tight, 180-degree angle. If any part of the design lifts with the film, lay it back down, rub it firmly again, and retry.
Do I need to wait for the UV DTF Stickers cure?

While the sticker will stick immediately, the adhesive takes about 24 hours to fully cure and reach its maximum bond strength. We recommend waiting at least a full day before washing the item or exposing it to heavy wear and tear.

Are the applied UV DTF stickers waterproof and dishwasher safe?

Yes, once fully cured, UV DTF stickers are highly durable, scratch-resistant, and waterproof. However, to extend the absolute maximum lifespan of the design on items like tumblers or mugs, hand washing is highly recommended over placing them in the dishwasher.
